Karl Place doesn't fear any light-welterweight in Britain – and why should he?
Named as one of the 'XI to watch in 2011' by a panel of Sky Sports' boxing experts, and riding high at 15-0 (8), Place is supremely confident as he heads into the biggest fight of his career – a British title eliminator against Merseysider Steve Williams at the Robin Park Centre, Wigan, on Dec 3.
"I've been looking forward to it since it was announced," deadpanned the 23 year old Mancunian. "I remember watching him against a Scottish kid [Paul 'Charlie' King] and thinking 'he'll be a good fight for me in the future'. He does well with tickets, I've got a few coaches going over, it's live on Sky – so this is what it's all about."
Although less experienced, Williams, 11-1 (4), is a former English champion and one-time British title challenger (Steve retired after 10 rounds against Lenny Daws 9/7/10) who undoubtedly represents a step up for Karl. Tuned into the challenge and respectful of the threat his opponent brings, it's no surprise that 'Bulbhead' has pushed himself like a man possessed in his quest to move from touted prospect to bona-fide contender.
"He's a fit lad, he's game, he's up for the fight and I know he's going to put his all into it," assessed Place. "He's a tough fighter, he's going to come for a fight and he'll make it hard but I'm as fit and strong as I've ever been.
"This is the hardest I've ever trained. Everything's gone spot on. We've changed a few things up like training at eight o' clock [fight time] and I've never felt this good. I've never cut any corners and I used to think to myself that I could train hard but this time I've absolutely pushed my body to the limit."
It's a busy time for the domestic light-welter division. The weekend after Place and Williams clash in what many are predicting could be an undercard fight of the year, current king Ashley Theophane takes on the challenge of Nigel Wright at the Peterlee Leisure Centre (December 10). The outcome of that contest is far from a foregone conclusion but, if everything goes to plan then, whoever rules the 10st roost - they'll be on Karl's radar early in 2012.
"I think Theophane will win on points," predicted Place. "He's experienced; he's the champion, plus Wright's always fell short and Theophane's at a better stage in his career. I want to get this fight won, put on a good performance and I want Theophane in the New Year. Whoever wins though, I'll fight them, 100 per cent.
"I think I can go to the top of the game. I don't want to sound big-headed about myself but I know I'm going to put everything I can into this sport and get everything I can out of it while I'm here."
