End of the season winding down although it didn't end on a particularly good note.
So that's it, my first full season at FTM Sports has come to an end with the show on Friday night bringing down the curtain on a good 12 months for us.
The only blemish of Friday Night was the draw for Tony Jeffries which was a disappointing result for a man who obviously has a lot of talent still to shine through. Since the end of the fight a few things have come out about preparation and injury which is a shame because on his day he is good enough to mix it with the best. I have been to enough sparring sessions to see enough to say that with confidence but for Tony it has not worked out in the ring so far.
With the pressure off and everything out in the open, I think this will be the making of him as a fighter. As Frank Sinatra famously said...The Best Is Yet To Come.
Stuey Hall retained his British title with a dominant display against the brave Martin Powers. It was a great atmosphere in the dressing room beforehand. On the day of the weigh in when I interviewed Martin he got to the end of his big confident statement, only to miss off the last crucial word. He said, “and if he things it's going to be easy, he's got another thing......” and then walked off! In the dressing room he was telling everyone about it and how he looked an idiot on the film!
I wish I had a heart as big as his, in the 3rd, 4th and 5th rounds he was on the receiving end of one hell of a shellacking but he kept coming and he kept coming. In the end I don't think he should have been stopped when he was. He had come through the toughest part of the fight and was just starting to impose himself on the fight. With 6 minutes to go he still had the slimmest of slimmest chances to spring an upset. But if he would have got chinned soon after the everyone would have been screaming at the referee, so he couldn't win.
Off to Portugal tomorrow with Frank and the dog. 25 hours on the boat and 12 hour drive from Santander to Faro...who said boxing was glamourous!
