ABA champion Joe Hughes turns pro with Frank Maloney.
Frank Maloney has announced his second high profile amateur signing in a week after ABA champion Joe Hughes signed his professional forms with the London based promoter.
Hughes has been touted as a future star and has attracted attention from a number of different British promoters but has decided to sign with Maloney after a number of positive meetings. He told The Standard:
“Frank Maloney put together what looked the best package.
“He has even talked to me about the possibility of going out to the States to train and fight at some time in the future.
“I have been told I will have my first bout on a Sky TV-covered bill on October 16, although I don¹t suppose my fight will be going out live.”
Joe, 19, won his first amateur title in May and was expected to join up with the Commonwealth Games squad but the youngster was left out to dry and decided to turn pro rather than wait around for the an opportunity that might never arise. He explained:
“We had been led to believe that winning the ABA title would secure a place on the Commonwealth Games squad.
“Apparently, it had been discussed at the ABA's AGM. However, I have not been invited to any England training camps nor have I been offered even a minor international contest to prepare for.
“I would dearly love to have represented my country at the Commonwealth Games this year and it has been a dream for some time to fight at the London Olympics in 2012.
“But I can¹t do much more than win the national title! The next step is "selection". They don't have to select the Champion. They can select whoever they like and who ever they select, I wish them the very best!”
The Malmesbury youngster has already been honoured by his local council and will continue his associations with the club he has represented since he started boxing. He will work under the fuidance of trainer Andy O'Kane and will make his first appearance in the ring on the undercard of Sam Webb's British title defence against Martin Conception on October 16th.
